PROCLAMATION: From the City of Watsonville, Presented on September 3, 2015, by Mayor Nancy Bilicich in honor of our 116 years of service to the Community.

The Watsonville Woman’s Club…

  • Was Founded in 1899 for the literary improvement and social advancement of its members and the community.
  • In 1905 initiated contact with the Carnegie Foundation for grant money to construct a Watsonville Library, and later led a fund raising drive to purchase land for it at the corner of Union and Trafton St.
  • In 1909 sponsored a monument bench at the Pajaro River bridge commemorating the Portola expedition through the Pajaro Valley.
  • Advocated the 1912 purchase of land for a playground (future Callaghan Park), and the 1936 building of a second  community park on Second St. (future Marinovich Park), and provided funds for playground equipment.
  • Built its own clubhouse in 1917, making it available for community activities, including 46 yrs as a site for American Red Cross blood drives, and an early meeting place for the local YWCA, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and the Community Chest (forerunner of United Way).
  • In 1929 proposed naming Mintie White School after Arminta White, pioneer Watsonville teacher and early WWC member, with members planting trees on the school grounds and campaigning for stop signs near it  for student safety.
  • In 1937 formed its Garden Club, which later established the county fairgrounds Memorial Rose Garden.
  • Was heavily involved in civil defense activities and operating the Soldier’s Club during World War II.
  • The Watsonville Woman’s Club Foundation, established in 1992, was created for the purpose of receiving tax-exempt donations from Club members and friends.   These donations are used for the purposes described, as well as for the restoration and preservation of the historical 1917 building owned by the Club.
